How does the Faculty help Pharmacist Independent Prescribers?

Practice as an Independent Prescriber (IP) involves continuous learning, continuous quality improvement if you like, to ensure that practice always advances to meet patients’ needs.

I see the link between the RPS Faculty and the IP role as a virtuous circle. Prescribing helps my Faculty portfolio, which in turn helps my continuous development as an IP. My prescribing role, subsequent mentorship of colleagues and teaching contributed to my Faculty portfolio, particularly in clusters 1 and 5, ‘Expert Professional Practice’ and ‘Education, Teaching and Development’. Faculty eight week fast track plan – my experience

Contemplation
For a while I have been contemplating starting my Faculty application for professional recognition of advance practice to validate my experience post-registration as an education and training lead pharmacist. Once my development has been recognised post-nominals will be granted that signify my stage in practice. This provides a means of demonstrating to patients, the public and my employer, that I have achieved a designated level, thus providing evidence of capability as a professional.

Facing the challenges ahead as a recently qualified pharmacist

Daniel 150After the thrill of passing the pre-registration exam had subsided somewhat and I joined the register as a pharmacist, it slowly began to dawn on me that despite all the BNF tagging in the previous months there was so much more to learn.  Not only is there a wealth of clinical knowledge to absorb and new skills to refine, but there is also far more I want to get out of professional development than I can achieve by merely documenting CPD entries.

Procrastinate not – attend a RPS Faculty surgery

First, let’s get one thing straight. Anyone who knows me will know I didn’t do this whole Faculty thing spontaneously! I was asked to do it and I said ‘yes’. However, anyone who knows me will ALSO know that I wouldn’t have said ‘yes’, if I wasn’t moved to do so!

It would be something of an understatement to say that I am less than proficient at recording my Continuing Professional Development (CPD) entries. I attend courses and I discover gaps in my knowledge all the time. I learn new things every day, most of which I should have learned years ago! But, and I know I am not alone, I am always ‘too busy’ to make the relevant entry. Clearly I’m not. But I like to tell myself that I am. And anyone else who will listen.
